Max Beckmann (Max Carl Friedrich Beckmann; 1884 – 1950) was a notable German painter, sculptor, printmaker, and writer. His intense works, blending Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), featured sharp lines, bold colours, and dramatic themes reflecting the human condition during tumultuous times. After the Germans deemed his art "degenerate", he fled to the Netherlands but continued to create profound pieces. Although associated with Expressionism, Beckmann rejected the label. His post-WWI style incorporated distortion and disturbing imagery, often conveying moodiness or unease, even in lighter subjects.
This image shows a cute cat sitting on a pillow surrounded by flowers with tiny heart lights, blending the intensity of Max Beckmann's style with a playful and whimsical twist.
