With her groups deployed, Cate kept an eye on Lenarzo via the screen. She needed to get closer; every minute she had available was needed, and it was going to be close. The medic had told her it would take the best part of 15 minutes to get everything set up, leaving only a 5-minute window. And it was going to take 3 of those 5 to have everyone in place.
Her eyes were drawn to Neil. He saw it, shaking his head in resignation. He mumbled something under his breath.

A striking picture of a rugged, bald man with a black beard aiming a rifle, as a young Australian woman stands behind him in a dimly lit passageway of a futuristic space station, with sharp focus and exquisite composition.

Neil radioed Cate. “Cate, I’m in position, but something’s troubling me. Two of Lenarzo’s goons have vests that seem bulkier than necessary. I think they’re wearing explosives.”
Cate’s face went pale. “Understood. Stay sharp, Neil. We can’t afford any mistakes.”
Neil’s mind flashed back to Afghanistan. He knew what they were dealing with. “Cate, if things go south, they’re willing to sacrifice themselves.”
Cate took a deep breath, steadying herself. “We’ll be ready. Just hang in there, Neil.”
He shrugged his shoulders, knowing better than to argue. “Fine, but stay behind me and keep your head down.”
They set off, Mel trailing just behind Neil. As they neared their position, Neil turned to her. “This is as far as you go. Stay here, near these packing cases.”
Reluctantly, she agreed. “Be careful, Neil.”
He nodded and continued, finally reaching a corner where he had a full view of the market area. A half dozen of Lenarzo’s people were not more than 15 meters in front of him. Even whispering might have been a problem if not for the loud, faulty ventilation panel above them.
