Rhinos and Oxpeckers

Oxpeckers benefit rhinos in at least two ways. They feed on ticks and other external parasites; they also serve as sentinels to warn rhinos of approaching predators.

The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in the KwaZulu-Natal province is a very underappreciated game reserve that ought to be considered by visitors to South Africa. It is an affordable and compact "big-five reserve" where visitors will almost certainly see rhino, elephant, buffalo and lion; they also stand a reasonable chance of seeing leopard with good luck and eyesight. It is also conveniently close to Lake St Lucia (iSimangaliso Wetland Park) where hippos and crocodiles abound, along with a large range of antelope and birds.
