There is no record of Hamnet's cause of death. It is unlikely that he fell victim to the plague, as there was no plague in Stratford that year.
It cannot be ruled out that William or his younger brother Edmund, also a London actor, took the boy to London and there he contracted some disease. Edmund presumably fell victim to the plague in London, but ten years after Hamnet's death.
This image shows William Shakespeare playing catch with his son, Hamnet, in their backyard. The scene is rendered in a photorealistic style with pastel colors, resembling a retro pencil sketch.
