Tantalus was punished by the gods for stealing their secrets but most notably for killing his own son, cooking him for a feast, and serving him to the gods. For this outrage, he was cast into Hades, and his endless appetite would be his eternal punishment. He was forced to stand submerged in a pool of water, with a nearby fruit tree offering its fruits, but every time he reached for it, it would bend away from his grasp. He spends eternity being teased by the prospect of food, only to never get it. This is why we call such a situation "tantalizing."

This is part of a series dedicated to famous punishments in Greek myth, dedicated in particular to two fans of such works: @Diomedes and @POP-WIZARD .
A dramatic depiction of Tantalus in the depths of Hades, forever tormented by unattainable food and water. Shadowy figures witness his suffering in this classic Hellenic scene. The artwork is highly detailed.

This one is wild. The fruit tree looks alive. There must be a deeper meaning to him being half submerged in water. I am enjoying speculating on the possibilities.
