Japan was nothing like the world he’d grown up in. The streets were alive with neon signs, electric sounds, and the sharp contrast of traditional and modern. Towering skyscrapers reached up to the smoggy sky, while old, wooden houses stood quietly in the shadows of the city’s expansion. In the distance, he could see the Yokosuka Naval Base, where his father spent most of his days.

As Will took another bite of his nikuman, his eyes caught sight of Yumi leaning casually against the low wall by the school entrance. She was talking with a couple of other girls, her smile bright, but it didn’t reach her eyes. Yumi Sato—the girl everyone knew but few dared to approach. Not because she was untouchable, but because her ties to the local racing scene made her more mysterious than most. Everyone knew her father owned the best garage in town, and everyone knew she wasn’t just some bystander in the racing world.

Will slowed his pace, feeling the familiar stir in his chest. He had never quite figured out Yumi. There was something about her that pulled him in—her easy confidence, the way she carried herself as if nothing fazed her. She wasn’t like the other girls at school. While they chattered about fashion and magazines, Yumi was more interested in engines and exhaust systems.

“Oi, _gaijin_! You heading out already?”

Will turned his head to see Shoji Watanabe, one of the boys in his year, smirking as he walked past with a couple of friends. Shoji always had that edge to his voice when he talked to Will—like he was testing him, seeing how far he could push before Will reacted.

Will didn’t bite. He never did. Being the foreign kid, the outsider, had its perks and its downsides. He wasn’t really interested in playing their games, especially not with guys like Shoji.

He was about to reply when Yumi’s voice cut through the noise. “Shoji, leave him alone. I swear, you’ve got nothing better to do.”

Will blinked in surprise. Yumi rarely got involved in these little squabbles. Shoji, clearly stung by her dismissal, scoffed but kept walking.

Will gave her a nod, the bun still halfway to his mouth. “Thanks.”

Yumi shrugged, her eyes scanning him for a moment before she smiled, this time a bit more genuinely. “No problem, Davenport. You heading to the garages tonight?”

_March 14, 1988_

The final bell rang, and the hallways of Yokosuka High erupted with the clatter of feet and voices. Will Davenport, backpack slung over one shoulder, was already halfway out the door before most students had even packed up. His mind wasn’t on school anymore. The real lessons, he figured, were waiting out there, on the streets, with the hum of engines and the thrill of speed.

He fished into the front pocket of his jacket, pulling out a half-eaten nikuman, the fluffy steamed bun warm against his palm. The smell of the savory pork filling mixed with the faint scent of gasoline from the nearby garages. Nikuman had become a quick go-to snack for Will in the last couple of months. The small food stalls outside the school gates always had a fresh batch ready, and the way they fit perfectly in one hand made them easy to munch on while he rushed to meet the local boys.
