When filming started with k.d. lang as Tank Girl and Michelle Rodriguez in her first role as Jet Girl, plus the real Australian military experiments, the rippers, the lesbian community became so excited that the producers got cold feet. A test screening to lesbian test audiences in West Hollywood confirmed their biggest fear: The first 10 scenes caused such a hype with lesbian audiences, that the producers feared, straight audiences would shun the movie as a reaction. So the producers recast the main actors with Lori Petty, Naomi Watts, and Ice-T, the latter of whom they sqeezed into a silly kangaroo costume. Instead of finishing a lesbian cult classic, they made a movie nobody cared to see.

The reality behind this: This is wishful thinking. These actors weren't cast originally. However, what's true is the main reason, why the most movie watchers complained about it.
