São Tomé and Príncipe – Liberation Movement, early 1970s

Anti-colonial movements in São Tomé and Príncipe, influenced by MPLA and PAIGC strategies, organized clandestine resistance against the Portuguese administration in the early 1970s. Although the islands achieved independence in 1975 with comparatively less bloodshed, the colonial legacies of centralized control, plantation hierarchies, and militarized governance left social and political tensions that shaped post-independence governance and sporadic political instability.
