The Martian J'onn J'onzz, a scientist on his world, is accidentally teleported to Earth by the robot brain of Professor Mark Erdel. Professor Mark Erdel, the only one capable of operating the robot brain, succumbs to a heart attack from emotion; 
J'onn J'onzz thus finds himself stuck on Earth. While waiting for his people working on the Star-Ride spaceship project to reach Earth, J'onn J'onzz explores his adopted planet. Noting the high crime rate, he became a police inspector under the identity of John Jones.

Like all Martians, J'onn J'onzz possesses superhuman strength, is a telepath and shapeshifter, is capable of flight, and has heat vision. It can also alter its molecular structure to become invisible or intangible. Due to his shapeshifting abilities, he is also capable of healing himself at high speeds. However, it is vulnerable to fire.

It was also learned that his usual appearance, although betraying his alien nature, was not his true appearance...
