Subsistence living is defined as self-sufficiency and reliance on local resources. The idea of a family producing enough for themselves with extra sold in a marketplace weekly and some stored for lean year - the idea of producing more than the bare minimum. It's a simpler life. Farming on this scale above always felt wrong to me.
As a kid, my summer 'vacations' started with joining in the strawberry harvest already underway. Then directly into picking row after row of prickly raspberries. Maybe a few days break before picking pole beans and then school started again. Pole beans offered shade from the sun but sticking bare arms into the plants to reach beans caused a rash from the scratchy leaves. Summer work was necessary if I wanted new school clothes, shoes and school supplies.
Nowadays, most of the farms are owned by (East) Indians and their poorer relatives and recent immigrants work in the fields. In summer, I see lots of Hispanic men too. They usually pick tree fruits
