In all fantasy literature (which I love very much) my absolute favorite work is Stephen R. Donaldson's “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever.”
In "The One Tree" (a novel in the Second Trilogy) Nom the Gorgon is a powerful creature from the Great Desert. The scene involving Nom is quite intense. Thomas Covenant and his companions encounter Nom, who is initially trapped in the Sandgorgon's Doom, a magical storm created to contain such creatures.
Covenant offers Nom freedom in exchange for help. Nom agrees and becomes a crucial ally. He aids the party by breaking down the gates of Revelstone and later helps defeat the Raver Samadhi Sheol.
