Seized by Britain in 1810, the isle became a sugar monoculture built on first slavery and then indenture; the slave and indenture systems caused high mortality, deep social rupture and environmental loss — plantation brutality and disease produced deaths over the colonial era counted in the thousands to tens of thousands.
