František Kupka (1871 – 1957) was an artist from the Czech Republic. He was a pioneer of the Abstract Art and Orphism movements; the latter is an offshoot of Cubism focused on pure abstraction and bright colours. Kupka’s evolution from figurative painting to abstract expression reflects his deep interest in philosophy, optics, and the search for spiritual knowledge. His work is known for its vibrant colour schemes and geometric forms which explore the relationship between colour and motion. Kupka utilised a range of materials from traditional oils to watercolours and charcoal, profoundly influencing the development of Modern Abstract Art.
