Dreamshaper XL Lightning
1967 Plymouth Valiant, 4 door
In the early 1970s, I think about 1973, my mother's next older sister and her four kids came from Virginia to visit us one summer in South Carolina. I don't know what happened to the car and driver that brought them to us, but we were how they got back to Virginia.
Packed in that Plymouth, along with food for a roadside picnic, were 3 adults and 8 children - 11 people, in what I assume to have been a five or six passenger vehicle. The adults all sat in the front seat.
These were the days before seatbelts and infant car seats were mandatory. There were kids tucked all sorts of places to fit us into that car. I was one of the "floorboard" kids, right passenger side, in front of my oldest cousin on the trip.

To continue the story, part 2....
The trip took us about 14 hours. Potty breaks and picnics were on the side of the road. After one of the picnic stops, we kids were getting loaded back into the backseat area. My oldest cousin asked if everyone was ready for her to close the door. I thought that I was ready, so I said, "Yes", and she closed the door.
I wasn't ready.
My foot was in the door, though I didn't realize it. When the door closed, I realized it alright! I let out a howl that would have awakened the dead. My toe swelled up nearly as big as my little sister's head and turned all sorts of shades of purple.
While this was a physically painful event, it let to one of my best memories with my daddy.

To continue the story, part 3
My toe was obviously broken and I had a lot of trouble walking. We all went to the beach, but I couldn't go in an enjoy the water like the other kids. My daddy didn't want me to miss playing in the water the one and only time our family went to the beach together.
It was then that he carried me.
Daddy carried me into the water so that I wouldn't miss the fun that the other kids were having. In that moment, in his arms, he gave me more than the fun memories of the beach.
He gave me love. In that moment, I felt it more than I can express.
Maya Angelou once said " I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
I don't remember what my daddy said that day, but what he did and how it made me feel are forever burned into my memory and my heart.
