Mette nodded, eyes down.

Elin sipped her tea. “I guess… part of me finds it hard to relate to. I like seeing faces. Expressions. But if someone chooses it—really chooses it—I can respect that.”

Mette shrugged. “Just… curious. I read something about it.”

It wasn’t a lie. But it wasn’t the truth either.

That night, alone in her apartment, Mette stood at the mirror again. A dark scarf rested in her hands.

She didn’t wrap it. Not tonight.

She just looked at herself and whispered:

“Would I still be me if no one saw my face?”

And even in the silence, she knew the question wouldn’t leave her.

Not yet.

But not forever. ...

Mette moved slowly through her apartment, lighting a single candle on the table, the scent of cedar and vanilla curling through the air. Her scarf was already on—an old, familiar one in slate grey, loosely wrapped. No makeup. No earrings. Just her and the fabric. ...
