The villagers huddled close beneath a broken archway. They whispered prayers to heroes who weren't coming tonight. And between them and the advancing dark stood a single green tiger - shoulders tense, claws deep in the cracked stone, his tail flicking slow and deliberate.

Cringer had once hidden from thunder. He had flinched at the sound of his own heartbeat, louder than the storm. But tonight, the trembling in his muscles was not fear - it was energy, gathering, alive.

He glanced back at the people behind him: the old, the wounded, the frightened. His eyes softened for an instant. Then he turned toward the creature slithering through the smoke ahead - a thing made of shadow and shards, feeding on terror like breath.

The monster laughed without sound, a hiss of wind through bone. It expected him to run. That was what fear always expected.

Cringer didn't move.

He drew in one deep breath, steady as the rising sun, and whispered - half to himself, half to the memory of a voice that had always believed in him.

When the silence returned, it was full - peaceful, but alive. Cringer stood panting, fur scorched in places, his body trembling once more. Yet there was no fear in him. Only the steady beat of his heart and the fading warmth of the light that had come from within.

A small child peeked from behind a fallen pillar, eyes wide.
"You… you're Battle Cat," the child whispered.

Cringer turned, his breath still heavy but his voice calm, a hint of a smile curving his fangs.
