She hated this life, but she had no choice. She had to fight, or die. She had to kill, or be killed. She had no hope, no future, no escape.

She closed her eyes and tried to calm herself. 

She knew she had to face her fears, or they would consume her. She knew she had to find her courage, or she would lose her will. She knew she had to fight for her survival, or she would perish.

She was an independent woman; she would make her way without excuses. She would fight to win. She would earn respect and honour.

One last time, she thinks of her parents, of her children in her native village... She also perhaps dreams of her companion killed by these soldiers who came to kidnap her, she the Celtic girl who nothing destined to become a fighter...

She felt a spark of anger in her heart. She decided she would not give up, not without a fight.  She raised her sword and shouted a defiant cry. 

She parried his counterattack and kicked at his leg. She fought with skill and determination.

The crowd cheered and booed as they watched the battle unfold. They saw the blood and the sand fly in the air. They saw the tension and the excitement rise. The fight lasted for several minutes, until both combatants were exhausted and injured. They stood apart, panting and bleeding, looking for an opening. They knew it was time to end it.

But he was faster than she expected. He blocked her sword with his shield and stabbed at her side with his spear. He pierced through her armor and flesh, hitting her kidney.

She gasped in pain and dropped her sword. She felt the blood gushing from her wound. She fell to her knees and clutched at her side. 

He was just too big and strong.

He smiled triumphantly and raised his spear.
