Copernicus formulated the heliocentric theory of the solar system, which shook the foundations of science at the time.
Renaissance polymath, active as a mathematician, astronomer, and Catholic canon, was born in 1473 into a bourgeois Torun (Poland) family.
He attended school in his hometown and then entered the University of Krakow. He did not finish his studies in science because his uncle sent him to Italy to study law, which he did not do either, and he continued with the sciences. Later, he studied medicine to receive his doctorate in law at 30.
After almost twenty-five years of work and shortly before his death, he published his book De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Orbs), in which he presented his model. This was one of the most critical events in the history of science, triggering the Copernican revolution and making a pioneering contribution to the scientific revolution during the Renaissance.
A watercolor portrait of Nicholas Copernicus with a heliocentric model of space in the background. The artwork is reminiscent of comic watercolors and displays meticulous detail.
