I remember sitting in my German class (at 12 or so) and having my mind blown by the fact that the folk in Germany had a *much* cooler name for their city of Cologne!

We in Spain don’t reach the German coolness either (Colonia)!

I get that these spellings are just a hangover from foreigners mis-hearing place names and inventing spellings for them, but it kind of annoys me that as a British/Irish person I'm using a wrong or made-up word for someone else's city/country. I *can* cope with using 'Espana' or 'Deutschland' (even if I can't access appropriate accents on my keyboard easily) - so why am I using 'Spain', 'Germany' and 'Cologne' etc. at all? Grrr!
