Just 2 weeks ago (or so) I had a piece where there was a notional Human and ditto, an Alien and I identified each as 'people.'
One poor soul said, 'are you sure they're both people?' 
THIS is the garden variety level of consciousness about such things. Anything, 'different' is automatically discounted, doubted, disparaged and denigrated. - OH and 'deported.' 

My Grandmother called every creature a "person"....  "Look at this little person!!!!"....  For snails, squirrels, snakes, kids....  So I grew up with it!!!!  Ahimsa!!!!
