Snow had turned to dirty slush on Sheffield’s pavements. The hotel stood like a fortress, its windows taped from the last protest. Inside, families huddled close, their bags still packed as if ready to flee again.

PC Isla Hartley leaned against the radiator in the lobby, her uniform damp from the cold. She was young enough to still believe in duty, old enough to know that duty rarely believed back

Mahdi Abdalla caught her gaze from across the room. He was tall, shoulders bent by journeys no one here wanted to imagine. He sat cross-legged on the floor, showing a boy how to fold paper into a bird. When he looked up, it was not with fear but with quiet defiance.

“You should rest,” Isla said as she crossed to him.

Mahdi shook his head. “Rest is for those who are safe.”

She wanted to answer, but her radio crackled harshly: All units, remain at posts. Secure the premises. Protect property. Maintain calm. Do not escalate.

Not one word about the people inside. Not about the children.

Isla’s jaw tightened.

Mahdi rose, the boy still clutching his sleeve. “Will it be bad tonight?”

“Stay inside,” she said. “Let us deal with it.”

His eyes searched hers. “Do you believe that?”

The answer lodged in her throat. She turned away before he could read it.

Kahlil Sinclair leaned against the balustrade, smoke curling from his lips, sequined jacket catching sparks of light. To the world he was K-Star, rising name in drill. To her, in this moment, he was only a man at the edge of something dangerous.

“You don’t like parties?” she asked.

He glanced at her. “Depends who’s asking.”

“Eleanor Worthington.”

“Kahlil. But you already knew that.”

She smiled. “You write about loyalty. About betrayal. I think you mean it.”

His amusement flickered into something rawer. “You’d be surprised how few believe that.”

Ellie hesitated, then stepped closer. The air between them thinned. When his hand brushed hers, she didn’t draw back. Their first kiss came quietly, as if it had been waiting for them long before this terrace.

Inside, the music throbbed. Out here, her world tilted, and she let it.

“Then let us not waste the hours we still have.”

He poured. Their fingers brushed again, and this time Isla didn’t pull away. When he leaned closer, she kissed him, slow now, not desperate but deliberate. The taste of tea lingered on their lips.

Later, in a narrow staff room with the blinds drawn, their closeness deepened into an intimacy wordless but undeniable. The world outside was hostile, but in that hidden hour, they chose to be only themselves: two people refusing to be broken by the walls around them.




Snow returned, softening nothing. Isla sat in her patrol car with Mahdi’s scarf in her lap. The radio barked: Unrest reported near the hotel. Secure perimeter. Protect property. Prevent escalation. Repeat — focus on premises, not on residents.

She pressed the scarf to her face, breathing in the faint trace of him. Then she started the engine, knowing the night ahead would test them both beyond words.

His hand lingered on hers. For the first time in his songs and her silences, they discovered what it meant to belong.


Meanwhile, Tariq, Rhys, and Mo whispered in the back of a club. Suspicion spread like smoke: one of their own accused of betrayal. A hit was planned in the shadows, even as Kahlil held Ellie close, unaware that loyalty and death were being bartered just a room away.

Me, too. I had a better image, but AI decided to give one of them a club foot to ruin it. Unfortunately, I don't know how to use the fixing tools, and I've heard from the people who do know how, Flux-Pro doesn't like having it's work altered. But thanks for the kudos. I wanted the sun coming up, but AI doesn't seem to care what you want. It takes certain prompts and completely ignores the others. (Some guys will sit through 40-50 iterations to get what they want.) I don't do that. Even with small changes in prompting after 4-5 tries I'm done.
