Silphium is a fennel like plant that was used as a highly effective abortifacient in the ancient world, chiefly by the Greeks. It was gathered from the wild and never cultivated. As a result it was gathered to extinction.  One of the many species of flora and fauna driven to extinction by the most  mindlessly destructive animal species to evolve on our planet, the H.sapiens ape. It's a sad irony that the survival of such an effective birth control herb would have been protective of all the species driven to extinction as a result of Human overpopulation and habitat destruction.
