**Do Dragonflies Dine With Silverware?**

**Why the English verb “to eat” sounds adorably polite to German ears**

*By someone who only recently started speaking English… with a linguist’s brain.*

When I first read the sentence *“Dragonflies eat mosquito larvae in the water”,* something funny happened in my mind.

I imagined a very small dragonfly. It had a napkin tied around its neck and was holding tiny cutlery in its hands. It was a charming dinner scene – refined, composed, civilized.

Of course, I knew this wasn’t what scientists had in mind. But as a German native speaker, the verb *to eat* triggered something very specific in my language brain – and made me smile.

Here’s why:

🍒 **Part 1. One verb in English – two in German**

In English, *to eat* works universally. People eat. Cats eat. Sharks eat. Even dragonflies eat.

In German, however, we have **two separate verbs:**

- **essen** – for **humans**
- **fressen** – for **animals**

The distinction is not only about species. It’s about culture.

The verb *essen* implies **cultivated eating** – sitting at a table, using cutlery, behaving like someone who knows how to chew politely.

The verb *fressen,* in contrast, implies **raw, animalistic consumption** – no manners, no napkin, just open jaws and primitive hunger.

So when English says “Lions eat antelopes,” German says: „Löwen **fressen** Antilopen.“

And when a child says:
„Der Hund **isst** sein Futter“ (The dog eats his food)
adults may smile and correct:
„Tiere (animals) **fressen,** Menschen (humans) essen.“

The mistake is cute – and telling. In early childhood, German learners often overextend the polite word, even to animals.


🐷 **Part 2. But wait – can people „fressen“?**

Yes. But beware.

In German, saying that a person *frisst* rather than *isst* is **not neutral.** It usually means:

- They eat greedily
- They ignore manners
- They eat too much, too fast, too noisily

It’s insulting. Saying „Der Typ frisst (wie ein Schwein)“ (“That guy eats like a pig”) is not a compliment.

But here’s the twist:

Since the 1990s, German youth culture has started to reclaim *fressen* as something funny and even joyful.

Today, someone might say:
„Boah, ich könnte ‘ne Pizza **fressen**!“
(“Man, I could totally *devour* a pizza right now!”)

It’s expressive, delightful. Some even refer to a delicious home-cooked meal as “geiles Fressen” (“awesome chow”).

**Generational difference alert:**

If I say “geiles Fressen” in front of my mother (born 1950), she might look offended – as if I just insulted her cooking.

If I say the same to a friend (born 1982), he might grin, grab a plate, and say “Gib her!” (“Gimme!”).
