A phrase attributed to the Greek philosopher Socrates (470 - 399 BC), it is actually one of the Delphic maxims and was inscribed in the pronaos (courtyard) of the Temple of Apollo in Delphi (ancient Greece), according to the writer Pausanias. It means that self-knowledge is fundamental to life and to knowledge of the world.
In Latin, the phrase, "know thyself", usually appears as "Nosce te ipsum" or "Temet nosce" - the latter was used by sisters and film directors Lilly and Lana Wachowski as an inscription over the Oracle's door in their films "The Matrix" (1999) and "The Matrix Revolutions" (2003).
