Created for the "No Theme, But Steampunk Style" challenge.
Between the cliffhanger episode "Scorpion" of season 3 and Seven of Nine's introduction in "Scorpion II" in season 4, the producers planned a Borg origin story double episode as a test pilot for a spin-off. Telling the tragic love story of a scientist of Species 1, who saved her lover's ravaged body after an hostile encounter with an enemy species (Species 2), by turning her into a cyborg.
Things turned sour: the Cyborg assimilated the capital's skyscrapers, connecting them to a planet-bound cube. As the scientist saw her error, she translated her longing for her lover to get forever close to her, begging her to assimilate her as the first biological organism. By doing so, however, that love was terminated null and void, the moment assimilation was complete.

2: The reality behind this: I just made this up for M_M's steampunkt challenge. Another origin story does exist, but in a novel, only. However, Star Trak novels are declared apocryphic the moment, TV films something in conflict with them.
1: The pilot was shelved though before prinicipal photography was even finished. Once again, Star Trek was ahead of its time. Teaser scenes at a Trek convention bombed, as the Trekkers couldn't digest the initial steampunk technology in a Borg context. Only two years later with the "Wild, Wild West", did get steampunk accepted by the mainstream. To this day, the Trekkies resent the Trekkers' hostile reaction to the teaser, thwarting an entire Borg-only series.
