Thank you. Yes, the *wealthy* Romans ate them as a snack to whet the appetite - roasted and rolled in honey and sesame seeds. It was meant to impress guests. Small villa owners would raise the dormice and then in late summer move them to smaller terra cotta container with shelves and airholes and fatten them on chestnuts and hazelnuts since the dormice would naturally fatten up for hibernation. Even those just viewed as a snack, they were eaten in great quantities by the rich and elite. It was a lucrative business raising them. But the middle class and poor never ate them.

Poor Romans *IF* they lived in Rome, and later Carthage, could expect a meager dole of wheat or corn, and later on in the Empire, bread. Otherwise if they were tenant farmers, in a good year, they could just feed their family and pay their landlords. But in bad years, they'd go into debt and if it continued, they had to give the land back and move elsewhere, hoping for better.
