Final Reflection
> Some stories end in death. Others in freedom. But the greatest stories end in a single unbreakable truth: that souls born in chains are meant to die unbound.
Anna closed her eyes.
> If we die tomorrow, let it be as free souls. If we live, let it be as a new people.
She whispered her final prayer into the desert wind.
“Mother of God… let them know we lived unbound.”
“Do you see them?” Anna murmured against his dark curls. “They shine because the night is endless. But dawn always comes, my son. Even to the darkest lands.”
Amastan wrapped his arms around them both. Together they stood in silence, watching the dunes ripple under the pale light.
Far beyond, caravan fires flickered on the horizon – the armies of Algiers advancing to crush their rebellion.
Anna turned to him, her veil trailing in silver moonlight. “I am beyond fear,” she whispered. “There is only what must be done.”
She reached down, lifting Azul into her arms. The boy gazed at the stars with solemn wonder.
The moon was full above the silent dunes. Anna stood at the edge of the oasis, the new banner fluttering beside her in the cold night breeze. Amastan came to stand behind her, his shadow merging with hers upon the sand.
“Tomorrow,” he said softly, “we ride to war. Are you afraid?”
