London burned in a different register. Tariq’s paranoia ripened into execution. In a back alley behind the club, fists and blades struck down the man accused of betrayal. Kahlil arrived too late, Rhys and Mo frozen in horror.

Ellie stood near the car, trembling. This wasn’t the world of candlelit rooftops and whispered jokes. This was blood spilt on stone.


Later, in her flat, she and Kahlil clung to one another as though their bodies alone could hold back the tide. Their love was frantic, wordless, born of terror. Each touch felt like a vow against the coming dark.

When dawn broke, she found him staring at the ceiling, silent. “They’ll come for me too,” he said.

She laid her head on his chest. “Then they’ll have to come for me first.”

But the tremor in her voice betrayed her.

The new laws arrived quietly, then with thunder. Television screens filled with Cole’s speeches: Purity. Safety. Order. Newspapers praised his “reform.” Police uniforms grew darker, checkpoints sprouted like weeds, and whispers of integration centres spread through the streets.

Ellie stood at her window in London and watched soldiers march in rhythm past St. James’s Palace. Kahlil had vanished weeks earlier. Rumours said he was in a detention camp near Dover. She no longer knew what to believe.

Fleeing south to north, Ellie found herself again with Isla. They shared a cramped flat above a shuttered shop in Sheffield. Every knock at the door made them flinch. Every siren froze their blood.

“They’ll come for us,” Isla whispered one night, clutching Mahdi’s scarf. “Two women. Two betrayals. It’s only a matter of time.”

Ellie touched her hand in the darkness. “We’ll survive. Somehow.”

By day they queued for rations, surrounded by posters: Protect the Family. Purge the Threat. By night they listened to the radio in secret, foreign stations whispering of protests abroad.

One afternoon, returning from the market, they saw a line of buses rumble past, windows covered with steel mesh. Behind them children’s voices cried out, muffled. Isla collapsed against a wall, shaking. “That could have been him,” she choked. “That was him.”


Ellie pulled her close, her lips trembling against Isla’s hair. “They want us afraid. That’s their power.”

Still, fear lodged itself in every corner. In the stairwell a neighbour disappeared overnight. At work Isla’s case files were erased, her desk stripped bare. “You’re reassigned,” her superior told her curtly, sliding a new badge across the table. The word Compliance gleamed where Protection once had.


I love Rebecca's expression. She looks like she's running for her life! Yeah, the outfit does look closer to her original one and this is still a great picture 😍

Still, i think most ould agree she looks great 👍

The crowd surged. Ellie tried to scream, but no sound left her throat. The banners snapped louder, the chants closer, her vision closing in until the world was nothing but noise and colour.

She gasped — and woke.

The room was quiet, dark except for the soft glow of the lamp. Kahlil stirred beside her, reaching for her trembling hand.

“It was a nightmare,” she whispered, pressing her palm against her chest. “Just a nightmare.”
