Mellivora capensis
The honey badger is more commonly known by its Afrikaans name, Ratel (RAAH-tl).
It is tough, fearless, intelligent, admirable, and the scourge of beekeepers who don't put their hives onto ratel-proof stands.
For @DeathMelonEater and @RPGCatLover :
A legendary ratel was Stoffel, rescued from a trap by Kruger National Park conservationist Brian Jones. His story is recounted here https://legendsandlegaciesofafrica.org/stoffel.php ↗️ and https://youtu.be/c36UNSoJenI?si=u7neqaYpRrF3Z0Sd ↗️
A striking picture of a honey badger feasting on honeycombs amidst beehive wreckage. The image is rendered with dramatic lighting and intense textures, reminiscent of wildlife art.

:) ah yes now that is as a very serious little mammal...tough like a wombat
When i was a wee boy of 9 ,i read Willard Price's African Adventure and in that book i rember the honey badger and the honey guide and have always been fascinated by their behaviour, a year later i ended up in the bush and the mangrove swamps of Nigeria, i got too see a lot of things that a young boy from ireland would never see ,and i never got to see a honeybadger because i was on the wrong part of the continent..,that was nearly fifty years ago, thanks Charlie for triggering the memories.
Oh, forgot to mention that I looked through the YouTube comments and someone posted and said they visited the centre 5 months ago in the summer and Stoffel was still there! Checking their longevity, it says in the wild, they only live 7 or 8 years due to predation and disease. But in captivity, looked after well, it can be 26-28 years and one was recorded to have lived 31 years. For that last one, careful records were kept too. Amazing!
Aw, thank you, Charlie. 💖 Yes, I heard about Stoffel years back and watched the video at that time. But thanks for posting this so I can rewatch it. I remember thinking Stoffel was my hero and he still is. I'm a bit of a snob in having trouble tolerating people who aren't smart and don't care to learn. I'm really the same with lots of animals, and the brighter they are, the more I like them. All mustelids (members of the weasel family) are seriously smart but I think Stoffel could perform rings around the lot of them!
Awesome! I got to see a couple of those at a small zoo. They put honey all over things in their enclosure and then let them out. We got to see them searching and licking!
