Sister Helena woke early the next morning to pray. She lit the candles on her prayer altar and put her scapular on over her pajamas.
“For Patrick’s soul... for all of them! Lord, open my lips. And my mouth will proclaim your praise.” She prayed Matins and Lauds; the psalms and canticles exited from her mouth like incense from a thurible, her prayer as an oblation to God. After her prayers, Sister Helena dressed in her uniform pants and a black t-shirt and went to the refectory. Heating up a pot of water, she made herself a bowl of instant oatmeal and a cup of coffee. Once all was ready, she sat down and said grace. As she finished Colonel Larkin, who had just come in from guard duty, made a cup of coffee and sat down at the table.

“Good morning, Sister,” said Colonel Larkin.
“Good morning, Colonel,” replied Sister Helena. “How are you?”
“All right,” he replied. “And you?
“Good, sir. How did your watch go?”
“Nothing to report on my watch.” He paused briefly. It took him a while to draw enough courage to say what he said next. Sister Helena sat there calmly, eating her oatmeal. “I… just wanted to say… thank you for what you did on the weapons platform yesterday. You did well.”
“Thank you, sir,” replied Sister Helena quietly. There was a bit of silence between the two. “Would you be alright if I went into the village today? I plan to speak with Father Anselm about the Naquadah ritual.”
“That's fine with me. Fairbairn wants to work on getting the power connected throughout the base to the Naquadah generator today. Just take your radio and your Zat with you.”
