Aurora understood what was happening, but also saw him as a tall reptilian creature with black scales and evil eyes. Refusing to let her friend be subjected to his abuse any more, she stabbed him in the back with a kitchen knife. She pulled it out and when he turned around to face her she slit his throat. The nurse looked at her, in shock at what had just occurred, and ran into an empty room and barricaded the door. The panic that overwhelmed Aurora gave way to an even more severe psychotic episode, which sadly ended with her throwing herself off of the cliff outside. The next thing Aurora knew, she was in a place with blinding lights all around her and standing before a council of old men in white hooded robes. They judged her on behalf of the god of the sky, damning her to hell for "interfering in the sacrament of marriage" and "murder, of another and oneself." She was thrown down into Hell...*continued in reply*

However, after three days, something strange and perhaps miraculous happened. As she writhed in pain, a mysterious and strange man in a mechanical flying suit flew down and whisked her away. They landed together in a realm that he told her was called the Fourteen Deserts, in the first of the fourteen, the Ember Wastes. Due to their proximity to the Pit, the Ember Wastes are a volcanic desert with black sands. He guided her to a small village nearby. The villagers gifted her a modest home and enough gold to survive for six months. When Aurora asked why this was all done for her, the strange man revealed that he and the villagers operate under the direct command of a being known as the King-Under-the-Black-Star. The King-Under-the-Black-Star rules over all Fourteen Deserts from his home in the city of Irem. He is sympathetic for those who are damned for no good reason, and sends out patrols over the Pit to find souls to save and bring into his realm...*continued in reply*

The protagonist of a novel I am working on taking place in the Fourteen Deserts universe. She lived on Earth in the late 1800s. She once called the town of Tropea in Calabria (Southern Italy) home. She was born to a rich and noble family, but was shunned by them while she was growing up due to her developing schizophrenia and other mental health problems. She was excluded from most of her family and was left living in a secluded, small apartment under the care of a dedicated nurse, her only friend. Her nurse had an abusive husband that would come over whenever he was drunk and would often beat the nurse. One day, after Aurora had a particularly bad bout of hallucinations, he did it to the nurse again...*continued in the comments*
