Apparently the feathers the real life winged hussars wore on their back or affixed to the saddle served three purposes:

Scaring the horses of the enemy cavalry. As the Wings affixed to saddle or armor would make the untrained "enemy" horse think there was a huge eagle attacking, and panic. 

Also serving to make the hussars appear bigger than they were and offering a lot of protection from enemy thrown projectiles with their sheer size. ✨🪽
