Not every hero that entered our lives through comics, tv, or movies came from the west. The characters from the east, but especially Japan, have left a huge impact on many people that is still felt to this day. If you grew up in the nineties, or even the eighties, these characters must stand out to you. Goku, Ash Ketchum, and Kenshiro were my favorites back in the day, though the list could go on forever.
These small tribute pieces don't adequately express my gratitude to the people who invented our modern mythology. West or east, there were common messages and values we shared once upon a time, and while most of it seems lost in today's hyper politicization, I'm hoping we can get back to some kind of normality. In the meantime, let's just take a second to remember an age where we shared at least one thing in common: our love of fiction, the characters in it, and the messages and causes they stood for.
I only regret not being able to include more of our heroes.
