“Everything's under inspection,” said Fairbairn. “Go get your tactical vest and I'll help you balance it.” 

Helena went to her quarters and grabbed her tactical vest and her excursion jacket. She returned to Fairbairn and put her on her jacket and her vest. Fairbairn crouched down and adjusted the straps with accuracy as if she had done it a thousand times.

“Too much weight on your left side—sidearm, two spare mags, first aid kit and a multi tool. If we shift the multi tool in one mag to the right...” 

Helena nodded and allowed Izzy to her equipment as she saw fit. The Scott moved one magazine and Helena’s multi tool to pockets on the right side of the Carmelite’s vest. 

“Who packed this vest?” Fairbairn wondered. 


“Probably some outfitter at the SGC who saw me in my habit and overcompensated,” Helena speculated. “We were short on time departing the SGC. 

“That explains it,” said Fairbairn. “In future you should pack your own tactical vest.”

Helena sighed. “Your right Izzy. It'll probably come back to me.” She felt her tactical vest remembering her Air Force days. “Could we repack it so that it's comfortable to me?”

Fairbairn smiled. “Certainly. She set her coffee down and knelt beside the bench. 

“We'll fix that. No point in carrying kit that's fighting you.” She started opening pouches and unfastening straps. “Where do you want your sidearm mags?”

“Right side, forward,” Helena replied instantly. “Muscle memory from the Air Force. And move the Med kit to the back. I kept catching it on the door frames at Zulu Station.” 


Fairbairn nodded, sliding pouches into place with the brisk efficiency. “Makes sense. Surprised you didn't do it yourself before the minute we got here.” 

“I thought about it,” Helena said as she smiled, remembering her Air Force days. “I found it calming then, almost contemplative. A way to feel ready.”

“Indeed,” said Izzy. They worked in companionable silence for a few minutes, the soft rip of Velcro in the clink of gear filling the air. Then Fairbairn glanced sideways.


Helena continued on and found a small workshop with several benches arranged in a manner similar to her tea workshop in North Dakota. “I'll have to requisition for tea blending things,” said Helena. “Once things become a little more peaceful.”

Helena continued to explore the monastery. At the cloister gardens, she saw Fairbairn sitting on a bench, a cup of coffee was next to her adjusting her gear and listening to CHVRCHES on her datapad. She noticed Sister Helena out the corner of her eye.

“Sister, I noticed on our last mission you were listing to starboard. Your tactical vest is going to have you walking in circles,” the Scott said. She took a sip of her coffee.

Helena arched an eyebrow. “I wasn't aware my gait was under inspection.”
