St. Martin's Day, 11. November, used to be the end of the harvest season. Celebrated on that day is in the catholic regions of mid to southern Germany Martin of Tours a Roman from the 4th Century, first a soldier, later a Bishop. His story, according to a song sung by children that day is, that he came upon a beggar sitting in the snow, parted his cloak and gave one half to the beggar, leaving before the man could thank him. When hiding in a stable from his army leaders, the noises the geese made, gave his hiding spot away, which is why on on this day, a "Martin's Goose" is given away in a lottery, often ending up as the christmas feast of the winner (unless the goose is "pardoned" by the winner)
In Northern parts, where it Protestantism is stronger, the day has been changed to celebrate Martin Luther instead. Some songs are sung by children all across Germany though, mostly light/lantern themed ones.
A festive parade of children with lanterns in a quaint European town. A Roman soldier on a white horse leads the procession under golden streetlights, reminiscent of medieval festivals and classic paintings.
