The sun had barely set when Will rolled his Toyota Supra into the lot behind the garages, the dull hum of the engine idling under the hood. A handful of boys were already there, their cars parked in a neat line, engines cool for now. The scent of motor oil, rubber, and the faintest hint of tobacco smoke hung in the air, mixing with the cool, salty breeze coming off the nearby harbor.

The garages were where Will had spent most of his nights lately. This was where the real training happened—the hours spent fine-tuning engines, learning every inch of his car, and picking up tips from Kenji and the others about racing the Touge. While the daylight hours were filled with school and the ever-present tension with his father, the nights here felt different—like a separate life he’d carved out for himself, one where he could be more than just the foreign kid from the Navy base.
