a quiet night

That night they sat by a small campfire that Pipper had made. His respect for his travel companion had grown during the day. They had walked at a crisp pace and although Pipper could see that Julia became tired, she hadn’t complained, not even once. She was a lot tougher than he would have expected from the daughter of a lord. Before sleep, they shared a meal that consisted of berries they had gathered along the way and a handful of dry wheat of which they had found a sack in the cabin. It was not much, but they were mice and mice could survive on less. Pipper drew a blanket around them both and together they watched the fire and talked.
