“With primitive tools, that may take some time. We need that done in a day or so,” said Bjornson.

“Agreed,” said Larkin. “I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to request some Seabees to help us. Hopefully General Carter has a detachment on standby.”

“Perhaps they can also help move the Stargate. Eleven klicks is a long way,” Bjornson said.

“So we need the Seabees to also construct a new platform for the Stargate closer to the village. I'll add that to the list,” Larkin said.

“How are we going to move it?” Fairbairn asked. “Stargates weigh twenty-nine tons. Very heavy.”


“We may have to ask General Carter to send a ship to help with that," replied Larkin.

It sounds like most of Earth's battle cruisers were engaged in battle with Hallam’s forces at the Alpha Site and Zulu Station, or elsewhere. I hope the *Aurora* fared well," said Fairbairn.

“Agreed. It may take some time before we get the Stargate moved,” said Larkin.

“Colonel, I worry how the villagers will react. Their memory of Sokar’s regime is still raw. A cleared perimeter might feel like an occupation to them. Moving the Stargate might open old wounds,” Helena said quietly but firmly.


“And if we don't move it, they'll be sitting targets. This isn't about optics, Sister,” Larkin replied in a tight tone. Helena stiffened, embarrassed. She meant well but the military calculus was cold. The room was silent for a moment.

Fairbairn chimed in. “She's not wrong, Sir. There's a way to do this tactfully. Helena and I can talk to Simon, the elders, and the villagers. Get by in first.” Larkin gave a small nod, then glanced back at Helena—softening. He remembered that Simon telling him that the villagers had spent the last twenty-five years in defense of the village. Perhaps having good line of sight was in the plans, but due to extenuating circumstances they couldn't get around to it. “Perhaps we are the catalyst for progress,” Larkin thought.

“Agreed. Helena and Fairbairn will coordinate with Simon and the elders.”

“We'll have to show the people that our machines are not magic,” said Fairbairn.

“So some catechesis of the tractors will be needed,” said Helena.

“Exactly,” said Larkin.

With their lunch concluded, Larkin allowed them an hour to recollect themselves before their briefing period they all used the time to change out of their classes and into their field BDU's, including Sister Helena.

Gathering all their notes, SG-24 reconvened in the refectory. Larkin lay out an assortment of snacks, tea, coffee and bug juice on the table. They all sat down, and Larkin called the meeting to order.

“Alright folks. Tactical observations of Eversham. Fairbairn, can you take notes?”

“Aye, I can, the Scott replied. “There’s a lot of trees surrounding the village. If we were to have an attack by an army of Jaffa or worse, we'd be caught unaware.”

“I agree. We need a kill zone around the village. Thirty meters should be adequate,” said Larkin.
