India – Calicut under Vasco da Gama (1502)

In 1502, Vasco da Gama returned to Calicut to enforce Portuguese dominance. Local trade networks were disrupted, and over the following decades, Portuguese sieges and coercive treaties caused significant hardship. The introduction of foreign diseases and economic control led to population decline and long-lasting social disruption along the Malabar Coast.
