For so long, everyone has had the wrong idea about hallowe’en. Why do we celebrate hallowe’en? Some say it’s because children wanted candy. Some say it’s to celebrate fear. Some say it’s just a day for the monsters and vampires. The truth of this widely celebrated event started as an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, the area where Ireland is on now. The people believed that the spirits of the deceased came back on hallowe’en, so they used to dress in scary costumes and light lanterns to ward ghosts away. This is where the pumpkins and costumes came from. The same festival (where spirits rejoin the living) is celebrated the opposite way in Mexico. Called Dia de Los Muertos, there, the Mexicans celebrate this day as a happy day, when the deceased can meet again with the living. There, instead of chasing the spirits away, they welcome the spirits of their ancestors. Please, keep this in mind as you celebrate hallowe’en this year. Thank you if you’ve read this far, and happy hallowe’en!
