“There,” Helena said. “Elegant and neat. The villagers will appreciate it, and Edward will notice.
Fairbairn glanced at her reflection in the small mirror and gave a short huff. “Blast it all, you're good at this,” she said.
Helena smiled. “Hey, it's what I do, Izzy.” Fairbairn put on a pair of white knee-high socks and a pair of black flats. Helena helped her teammate button the last buttons on her blouse and straighten the skirts. "Perfect. You look like yourself— just with the rough edges smoothed out."
“I feel like I'm playing dress up,” Fairbairn grunted as she tugged self-consciously at her skirt.
Helena grinned. “Tonight, you're just Isolde, not Squadron Leader Fairbairn. Go and enjoy it.”
Fairbairn adjusted her shoes then paused in the doorway. “You really think he'll notice?” she asked.
Helena’s smile softened. “He already has,” she replied. “This just tells him you did too.”

“Helena, did you have a boyfriend when you were... well...?”
“Before I entered Carmel?” Fairbairn nodded. “I did. In high school. His name was Ryan Caldwell. He was a handsome lad. Played baseball. I met him in Mrs. Wagstaff's home economics class. We went steady for a couple of years but in the end I wanted to pursue a career in the Air Force; he wanted to have a family after college, so we broke up.”
“Sorry to hear that, sis,” said Fairbairn.
“It's alright. We parted amicably. I still send him a Christmas card and a small note telling him how I'm doing. He sends me one too.”
“That's nice,” said Fairbairn. “Well, wish me luck.”
Helena gave her friend a warm hug. “Good luck, Izzy. I know you'll have a good time.”
“Thanks, mate,” Fairbairn said. “Walk with to the monastery gate?”
