After enduring the punishment of Hades, Theseus is rescued by Heracles, and makes it back to Athens.
However, Athens had moved on from him. Theseus's sons from Phaedra were not of age to rule, so one of his advisors took charge Athens. However, the advisor sewed unrest in the citizens of Athens, reminding them that Theseus had abandoned the city to join the Argonauts for adventure, then stole Helen from Troy, then tried to steal Persephone from Hades. He convinced the Athenians that Theseus was too unpredictable and incapable of making good decisions for Athens.
When Theseus approach his palace, the guards blocked his entrance, and told him he was no longer welcomed to return to Athens. Theseus tried to force his way in, but he was no in the state to overtake the guards.
This image depicts a powerful, shirtless King Theseus confronting his own guards at his palace. Rendered in an epic historical painting style with dramatic lighting, it captures his righteous anger.
