A meaty fist caught Edward on the shoulder knocking him sideways. Fairbairn caught have word, who greenest, trying to protect the Scott is another man's swung wildly. Instinct took over question; Fairbairn caught the man's wrist and twisted sending him sprawling.

“Not bad,” Edward muttered.

But it was like swimming against the tide. Every time they tried to pull free, the press of bodies closed in. Shouts and curses miss mingled with cries of “The Lady promises freedom!” and “Demon witch!” Until the whole Tavern was a storm of limbs and fury. The servers, Kite, and Henderson had taken shelter behind the bar.

Fairbairn locked eyes with Edward across the chaos, both struggling to remain on their feet. 

“Edward, I need to get to my purse on the ledge there,” Fairbairn said as she pointed to her bag. “I can summon help.”


“Alright,” said Edward a bit puzzled but confident in his date’s plan. He helped to guide Fairbairn to the brawling throng. Edward thought off a burly man. 

“So sorry there, Alf,” he said. They finally got to the windowsill. Fairbairn reached into her bag. She took out her comms and pressed the talk button.

“Helena, this is Fairbairn! We got a situation at the tavern! Locals are fighting! The Lady’s influence is in them! Edward and I are trapped! We need backup—not SG-24 or the Seabees, get the constable! Repeat: bring the constable!”

Helena’s stomach tightened. She pressed the comms to her lips. “Understood, Fairbairn. Hold on. I'll bring him.” She arose from the table. “If you gentlemen will excuse me.” Pfluger and Wright, who were still sitting across from Helena, nodded.


She went to Colonel Larkins table. He was conversing with Commander McClendon and Bjornson.

“Colonel, Fairbairn’s in trouble. Brawl at the tavern. She wants me to summon the constable. Permission to summon him, Sir?” asked Sister Helena.

“Permission granted, Sister. Good luck,” Larkin replied. Helena went to her quarters and grabbed her excursion jacket and Zat, she slipped into the night, boots crunching on the packed ground. The smell of air the air smelled of smoke and autumn damp. The glow of the tavern ahead pulsed with the shouting and crashing of wood. Shouts rang out—angry, fevered, laced with the Lady’s poison. Helena hurried down the lane until she came upon the constable’s office. She burst through the door. Sitting around a rustic table was the constable, a man named Alistair, and his two deputies. They were playing what looked like a card game. The three men were startled when Helena entered.


A shout from Jasper turned into a swing from Columbia, the swing turned into a crash of pottery and suddenly the Tavern erupted.

Mugs flu, stood spilled across the stone floor, benches toppled in the crash of bodies. Fiddler snatched up his instrument as the crowd surged.

Edward pulled Fairbairn against the wall. “Stay close!” he cried. Edward tried to keep both clear than both clear, but two villagers stumbled into their table and sent it crashing. Ale drenched Fairbairn’s skirt as she shoved one man— too hard and he went sprawling into another, sparking fresh blows. 

“Bloody brilliant,” Fairbairn muttered, ducking as a mug went sailing past her ear.
