About this picture: It can be psychologically and physiologically very damaging to try to suppress one's feelings permanently. Culturally, so-called speech acts have sometimes developed that probably have no malicious intent, but can nevertheless be very harmful, as they train children to suppress emotions. In English, for example, there is the phrase "boys don't cry", and in German the expression "a little warrior knows no pain". As a boy, I grew up with such comments myself and was even very proud of the fact that I hardly ever cried. It wasn't until I was an adult that I learned (thanks to wonderful friendships) to open up emotionally to friends and allow tears. I realized that this did me a lot of good. Later I learned that it is also an empirical truth. Even though bravery is an admirable virtue, we should have the courage to show and express our feelings - isn't that brave too?

So true! I literally held a speech in the tune of that (though minus the science) when I was a teenager, among teenagers with grown ups supervision (was a speech training class). It was the only speech of mine (and of everybody that day) that completely flunked in terms of public approval. The year was 1990. (I think we may have talked about this, not sure.)
Hey, that picture looks really sad! I know that it used to be the case that boys weren't supposed to cry! What completely wrong pedagogy. I know that... Of course he's allowed to cry... all boys are allowed to! 😥 Always... and they should be comforted and given a strong shoulder!! I know the German saying differently, though! I should know that grin but it might be regionally different. Where I lived, the saying was: "Ein Indianer kennt kein Schmerz" (An Indian knows no pain) in German: "Ein Indianer kennt keinen Schmerz." The term "Indian" is frowned upon these days because it's discriminatory. Native Americans have their rights! he he 😉
Oh Finni, I totally understand. Holding one's emotions inside can cause problems in the future. I know that all to well. I was raised by a monster and too scared to tell anyone until age 14. I really admire you. 🤗🥰😊
Wonderful narrative! I find that as I get older, I get more emotional 🥰
So very true Finni! Wonderful picture to go with you thoughts!
