Barbara Cartland took an interest in the practical application of gliders, and with the collaboration of two RAF officers was the co-designer in 1931 of a towed glider for the delivery of airmail. She also arranged for a record-breaking 200 mile towed flight. This led indirectly to the development of the gliders that delivered allied troops and equipment to Normandy on D-Day. She was awarded the Bishop Wright Air Industry Award in 1984.
This image shows Barbara Cartland piloting a vintage glider plane with her dog. The artwork has a whimsical, cartoonish style with bold lines and vibrant colors.

What a creativity well done !! We had this time 74 entries and one winner. I hope to see you in the next challenge
winner@JindraKoci : I'll publish this after the challenge has closed, but you might appreciate this little bit of aviation history while we wait. I thought about you when I discovered that her life was much more interesting than I'd realised. The glider named after her in photos I've found was a BAC VII.

Never thought BC could (let alone did) have a single redeeming 'feature' ... So, her contribution to aviation came as a pleasant surprise 😉 I found this (alleged) quote interesting (Wikipedia): "The only books (Princess) Diana ever read were mine, and they weren't awfully good for her."
