It's been so long since I last saw that movie that I wasn't consciously thinking of any scenes from it. I believe my chain of thought went more along these lines: "Superman shouldn't just be striking a pose and looking pretty; he should be *doing* something. Doing what? Something involving his super-strength. Lifting a very heavy object? Or pushing it sideways to accomplish something important?" And from there, the idea of using a huge mass of rock to plug up a canyon came to me, and I decided it's a stormy day, something has gone wrong somewhere upstream, and suddenly there's a flash flood being funneled down through the canyon . . .
