John Piper (John Egerton Christmas Piper; 1903 – 1992) was an English artist, known for his versatility across various mediums. He was a painter, printmaker, and designer of stained-glass windows, as well as opera and theatre sets. Piper’s work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments, and included tapestry designs, book jackets, screen-prints, photography, fabrics, and ceramics. Piper was associated with several art movements, including the Seven and Five Society, Neo-Romanticism, and Abstraction-Création. By the mid-1930s he was one of the leading British Abstract artists, but by the end of the decade, he had become disillusioned with non-representational art and reverted to Naturalism. He is most well-known for this figurative work. His techniques included the use of watercolour paints, coloured drawing inks, Indian ink, candle wax, and oil pastels.
