Horseshoe crabs, despite the name, are not crustaceans.

Atlantic horseshoe crab blood contains Limulus amebocyte lysate, a chemical used to detect bacterial endotoxins in parenteral products to ensure sterility, their blood saves lives.
500,000 are harvested annually for this purpose.
Fortunately scientists have recently been able to produce rFC enzyme synthetically which can be used in the same way. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/05/blood-in-the-water/559229/ ↗️

Forgot to turn off comments so ended up with the default thank you on here which I kind of never like unless it's a small challenge... now I don't know if I keep it open for "wow cool!" or "nice!" or just turn it off. 😔
