The Halls of Mandos held the souls of the dead Children of Ilúvatar, and were the dwelling place of Námo Mandos, Doomsman of the Valar.
It was to the Halls of Mandos that the spirits of the Children of Ilúvatar were gathered to await their different fates, and so Mandos was given its common name of the 'Halls of Waiting'. The Elves, after a period of cleansing and self-reflection, could be reincarnated into bodies identical to those of their prior life; however, Elves who had offended the Valar or committed particularly heinous misdeeds were doomed to wait in the halls until the end of time.
But Glorfindel's spirit passed The Halls of Mandos for a short time. Due to his noble actions that had saved many Elves in the Fall of Gondolin, he was re-embodied and dwelt in Valinor.
