Suffragist Emily Diana Watts  was one of the instructors of what was nicknamed suffrajitsu. Watts helped train women in self defence and the bodyguard of the WSPU, Women's Social and Political Union. Training in self defence was necessitated by the physical and sexual violence directed at suffragettes by the police and men in the general public, not to mention the ever present domestic violence.
